Another Week Another Hospital

On Thursday I went to the doctors very worried I would be headed to the hospital but all was well so I happily returned home. I have no recollection about what else happened on Thursday or Friday. I think Josh took the kids to the pool on Thursday..maybe? Shabbat dinner was nice and semi-quiet. The kids were up a little late.
Shabbat Josh wasn't feeling well and it was a lazy morning in our house. Danya and Jordy were happily playing Olympics in the attic. They came to report about their game to us so I asked them where they were from in the game since they have both been very interested in the countries. Jordy looked at Danya and asked if they should be from Chicken. It took me a second to realize he meant Turkey(which was his favorite country name after Hungary and Russia which he likes to pronounce in Hebrew-Rrrrrruseiah). We were cracking up. In the afternoon we spent some time listing all the baby names we weren't going to use and asking the kids to come up with names. The kids quickly picked up on the fact that we would often suggest outrageous names we would never use. I was looking at a baby name book and suggested Tziyona if it is a girl(no offense to anyone named Tziyona-it's just not a name for us-and no, we don't know what we are having). Jordy said "like Fiona" as in the character from Shrek. So then Josh suggested we just name the baby Shrek. Jordy, without missing a beat, said lets name the baby Donkey! That kid can be really funny! At around 6 the Gerson, Balsam and Mintz families came over along with a new olim family, the Nathans, for Seudat Shlishit. We were really sad to be saying goodbye to Michelle and Nathan and co. as they were moving away on Monday(ok...we can see them all the time since they are only a 20 minute drive but it is still really sad). It was so nice to see people but I was a bit overwhelmed(plus there were a MILLION kids-ok,not a million but 16 which when they are all together can sound like a million). Everyone stayed until after Shabbat and I headed back to bed.
Sunday Josh took the kids to the zoo in Yerushaliam. There were out a LONG time but had a great time. I am told they took a lot of pictures but I haven't seen them yet(sorry the blog has been picture free lately....hopefully we will fix that soon).
On Monday Josh was planning on taking the kids somewhere but they ended up having Meira and Moshe come over for most the day. Danya and Meira watched Annie since it was on TV which brought back a lot of childhood memories. Danya really liked it and her favorite song was Tomorrow in case you were wondering.
Tuesday morning I had a doctors appointment. I was a little excited since I was a few days from the 34 week deadline of bed rest. This is when the doctor told me I would be taken off bed rest and I would be free to do whatever I wanted(he specifically told me last week that I will be able to go to the beach). Everything was looking good but then he thought I was in the early stages of labor and apologized but he said I needed to go back to the hospital. I told him he promised me the beach this week and the summer was almost over. He apologized and said the summer in Israel isn't over yet. Anyhow, he said they would probably just observe me for 24 hours and make sure I am not progressing. Josh had been planning on taking the kids to Tel Aviv to some sort of water park. He decided that we should "try out" another hospital, Belienson, which is part of Rabin Medical Center in Petach Tikvah. He was hoping he could get me there and then continue with the kids to Tel Aviv. Unfortunately it took a LONG time at the hospital(we got there at 1:15 and I didn't get admitted to my room until 8:45pm). They did a lot of observing, testing and waiting. Luckily the hospital had a little "center" so after Josh got me where I needed to go he took the kids to lunch at the Kosher McDonald's, then they went to play at the play area in the Children's hospital(we passed it on our way in) and then bought them each a toy. They returned just in time to see me get a shot which they thought was funny. They hung out until 6 and headed home since it was getting late and they were getting bored. Josh brought them back for a sleepover at the Balsams(which we had actually planned the day before). They finally got me settled in my room. Of course I was starving but I missed dinner but they offered me some bread and salad. I had 2 roommates who seemed to have something against the air conditioning that I kept turning on and they kept turning off. The girl in the next curtain kept her overhead light on all night so it was pretty bright in the room. I was pretty tired from all the excitement of the day and all the walking around but of course couldn't fall asleep. Luckily I had recently downloaded Season 2 of Project Runway so I watched a lot of that. At around 1am I tried going to sleep but still saw 1:45 on my watch. I finally fell asleep when a nurse came and woke me at 2:15am. She apologized when she realized she had the wrong patient....thanks a lot! I couldn't fall asleep after that. At 3:15 I finally picked up my book and read until 5:15 thanks to the light from my roommate. The good part was that the roommates were out cold so I did get out of bed at 3ish to turn the air back on. I finally fell asleep and was woken up at 6am by the cell phone of one of the roommates and then all the morning activities of the hospital began. Ugh! They had me on the fetal monitor(they do this all the time at the hospital to make sure you aren't having contractions) for what the nurse promised would be 20 minutes but was an hour. During that time someone brought me breakfast. I was starving but waited until the monitor was done. As soon as the monitor was done the team of doctors came on their rounds. They basically said that I was not in active labor(duh) or progressing and since tomorrow I am 34 weeks they wouldn't stop it anyhow so I can go home if I want. They said I need to continue bed rest until I see my doctor again(which my doctor also told me) on Tuesday so that was disappointing but not surprising. After the doctors left I inhaled my bowl of cucumbers and tomatoes and my hard boiled egg. I called Josh to let him know he would need to pick me up but they wouldn't release me until they were done with their rounds around noon. The roommates turned off the air again(am I the only pregnant woman who is hot???) and I was reading and fell asleep. Of course about 20 minutes later a doctor came to ask me a question. I feel like I should explain the concept of rest to the medical personnel. At around noon they brought a gross lunch but I was so hungry after not eating much yesterday and my filing breakfast that I ate it anyhow. They finally released me around 1 and Josh came to get me. I happily returned to my bed and took a 3 hour nap. The kids came home at some point while I was sleeping and I am pretty sure Danya and I had a conversation but I couldn't tell you what it was about since I was half asleep. Jennifer Stern brought over dinner tonight which I think the kids ate. Jordy went to bed and Danya headed out to a sleepover.

More Olympics

You'd think that with sitting in bed all day in front of my computer I would be updating the blog more often...sorry!
Last week was very olympics filled. Danya was busy with play dates and going to the pool. Jordy was still in his camp, so they were entertained.
Friday night was a nice quiet evening. Shabbat morning Josh took the kids to the Rimon shul for the Halpert Bar Mitzvah. The kids came home all excited about all the candy they got and the food from the kiddush. I spent all day in bed. At 4:30ish Josh took the kids to the Halperts house for Seudat Shlishit. I told him it seemed early but he said that Alan told him to come around 4-4:30ish so he went. When they returned after Shabbat Josh apologized. He said when he got there around 4:45 Nicky said to him "Oh no, did Alan also tell you 4:30?" apparently it wasn't until 6 but the kids started playing and Josh said he helped set up a little bit.
Sunday I went back to the doctors office since when I went on Thursday they told me I needed to come back on Sunday.
I can't remember Monday...my guess is the day was spent watching the Olympics.
Tuesday morning Josh and Danya dropped me off at the doctors and then Josh took Danya to get a haircut. I was at the doctors office forever(like usual). Josh and Danya arrived before I was done and Danya overheard the doctor tell me that next week I am free and I can go to the beach if I want. Danya was all excited that I wouldn't have to be in bed anymore. I asked her what we should do in the couple days between the end of bed rest and school. Her wonderful idea? A movie! I thought that was funny because ALL I have done since bed rest is watch TV! We still have another week to decide what the big outing will be. Suggestions? A few minutes after we got home the phone rang from Jordy's camp asking if we were picking him up. I was confused because it shouldn't have been over for 2 more hours but apparently since it was the last day they were ending early. Josh ran over to get him and said that Jordy wasn't the last kid there(which made me feel a little better). Later in the afternoon Josh took the kids to the pool. Jordy is very into swimming like they do in the Olympics and he comes back to report to me how he swam.
Speaking of the Olympics...I bet you can't name a sport I haven't watched? Also, is it me or are there a lot of new sports this year(or is it that I never was able to watch so much of them and never saw the more obscure ones?). When did trampolining become a sport??? The kids still really like diving but Jordy also loved watching the pole vault(and come on, that Russian woman who won was so cute, who didn't love watching her win?) and the weight lifting(that cute German man who had a picture of his wife was so sweet!). He was also really excited to watch the medal ceremony a few times. He is learning his geography and thinks it is hysterical that there is a place called Hungary. Danya enjoyed the gymnastic events, particularly the diving. She could be a judge because she calls it when the go in the water wrong! Both kids were ok watching the hurdles but were bored when they did the replay. If you missed any sports events and want to know about them feel free to ask...I have seen them ALL!
Today was Jordy's first day without camp so Josh made pancakes with this kids for breakfast. I was very impressed! The kids were pretty entertained with playing in the attic all morning. I spoke with Tammy Mandel who arrived yesterday on Aliyah. I was looking something up for her on the blog about when we arrived and then continued to spend all day reading the blog from 2006. It kept me entertained for a while. Josh took the kids to Modiin in the afternoon to go to a video arcade in the bowling alley and then to go to the "fun place" which for those of you who don't remember, is the place that is like discovery zone with the climbing things with the slides and the ball pits(much easier to call it the fun place). They were out for a long time and returned with pizza.
Tomorrow the week countdown begins. Next week I will be 33 weeks and have only one more week of bed rest to go!!! I have been very antsy to be done the past week or so. I am pretty sure that next week will be a very long week! For all those of you who asked, the reason I am allowed off of bed rest is that at 34 weeks the doctor is no longer concerned about the health risks if the baby is born early. So if by going about my daily life(I can't even remember what that entails anymore!)I go into labor the doctor feels all will be ok.
That's all folks!

Bye Bye Savta Hello Olympics

On Friday I did nothing, as usual. Josh took the kids to their weekly visit to the falafel place. I know at one point my mom came to "supervise" the cleaning of the attic with the kids(I hope Lisa and Lanie will appreciate the use of the word supervise-our whole childhood when it was time to clean our rooms my mom would sit on our beds and supervise, ie. boss us around. This was before I realized I could con Lanie into cleaning my room for me). On Friday night my Mom joined us for dinner. The kids made it through about half the meal.
On Shabbat my Mom and the Balsams came over for lunch. We sat around talking for a while until the chair started hurting my back, then I made my exit. The kids went back home with them for a while. We all ate dinner/seudat shlishit and then Josh headed out to shul after getting the kids into bed. After he returned we watched most of the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. I have to confess that I am an Olympics junkie. I LOVE the Olympics. I usually spend 2 weeks watching whatever they are showing under optimal conditions. Well with the combination of bed rest and the first time we are in Israel for the Olympics I was a little worried about what would be televised. I was VERY happy when I found an Israeli channel that had it on. I was even happier when I found a European channel that was televising it with English commentary. I will say they are constantly showing the same things over and over again. I have seen the American men win the 4X100 relay race at least 15 times so far(and I think Josh has seen it at least 3 times) and I will say that the Israeli's love talking about Michael Phelps. I am also proud to say that I have taught Danya and Jordy the joys of watching the Olympics. They are amazed during most sports watching the abilities of others(as am I) and whenever they come in my room they want to know which sports are on and want to watch with me. Danya's favorite seems to be the diving(she has also seen a lot of the swimming and groans when it comes on). She did ask me, while watching the Mens synchronized diving if they practiced this? As if 2 guys just decided to enter this competition and this was the first time they ever jumped off a diving board! Jordy seems pretty impressed with each sport we watch. I like hearing him describe the weightlifting we saw where "there is a bar with heavy things on it and only one man could pick it up over his head because it was so heavy".
A few other gems from Jordy about the Olympics: We were watching womens Judo(or was it Karate?) and there was a woman competing from Israel. I told him that she lived here in Israel and he asked me which house? I guess he thought she was our neighbor.
We were watching mens swimming and Jordy commented that he does "that" at the Nili kiddie pool(where we have a pool membership). I just see the 5 year olds in the tiny kiddie pool doing butterfly races!
On Sunday I had an appointment with the nurse at the doctors office(have I told you yet that you need a separate appointment to see the nurse to have your blood pressure taken and for them to track your weight and if you are taking your vitamins?). The kids spent the day in their pajamas watching TV. My Mom came at around 5 to spend some time with the kids before she left. She stayed until they went to bed/the end of Tisha B'Av. Then we said goodbye to Savta and thanked her for all she did for us this trip. I am sure this wasn't a fun trip for her but we really appreciated it.
On Monday Danya went with Lori and co. to the pool in the afternoon and Jordy went to his camp...and we watched a lot of Olympics.
This morning I went back to the doctor who said all is well. I was there forever since everyone was running late and I have to have an ultrasound and sit with the fetal monitor each time for a half hour. He did tell me that in addition to seeing him each week I need to have 2 ultrasounds and do the monitor 2 times a week until 34 weeks(which is 2 1/2 weeks from now). So I get to go out of the house twice a week now. I asked him why and he just said that as it is getting closer he wants to watch me closer, but again he said at 34 weeks I am free, so still looking forward to that day. Of course I came home so tired from being out of bed so long, so I had to take a nap. Josh took Danya to the new mall in Modiin to buy a new backpack and get her lunch. He brought me back some Sbarro's pizza which was yummy! I am looking forward to checking the new mall out one of these days! Otherwise Moshe came over in the afternoon to play with Jordy after camp and Lori took Danya with her kids to the pool. And then we watched more Olympics.

Where does she come up with this stuff???

I wasn't going to post today as not too much happened. Jordy went to his camp and Danya went with Josh to buy her school supplies, which was her "reward" for behaving nicely at the doctors yesterday. It was the reward she requested, so we were happy to oblige. Meira came over to play with Danya and when Jordy's camp was over Danya and Meira went to pick him up and bring him home. When they got home Danya came in my room and announced "the little rascal is home"! I have no idea where she got that one from but I was cracking up! Moshe also came home with our little rascal and all the kids played all afternoon. My Mom took everyone out for dinner(everyone but me...but she did buy me dinner that Josh brought home...thanks Mom!). That's about all, I just really wanted to share the little rascal story!

My Birthday at the Hospital

OK, I am going to backtrack a bit here. Going back to last Shabbat….
My parents came over on Friday night (read: brought dinner). While my Dad and Josh were at shul my Mom, the kids and I were sitting in the living room. Jordy decided he was going to show us his famous handstand. He got onto his hands and as he fell (which he always does) he started screaming louder than I have ever heard him scream before. He grabbed his hand and wouldn’t stop screaming. He had bent 3 of his fingers backwards. His fingers got swollen very quickly. We finally calmed him down but then Danya was mad because Jordy always gets attention when he gets hurt (this ALWAYS happens, Jordy is screaming in pain and Danya is sulking because we are paying attention to Jordy and not her). My Dad and Josh returned from Shul and we had a really nice dinner. Both kids went to sleep during dinner so it was pretty quiet most the meal.
Shabbat morning my Mom came over again to watch the kids so Josh could go to shul. After shul Lisa, Nafi and co. and my parents came here for lunch. We sat around talking for a while and I think Danya went back with them and Jordy stayed home.
On Sunday morning Josh took Jordy to the doctor who told him his fingers were sprained. My Dad came over in the afternoon to say goodbye to me since he was leaving that night. Otherwise I can’t remember anything remarkable from Sunday or Monday.
On Tuesday morning I headed out to my weekly doctors appointment. This is when the weeks fun began. My ultrasound showed things had (of course) gotten worse and the doctor gave me the bad news that I would be heading back to the hospital. I came home and shared the news with Josh who wasn’t so happy to have another round of the hospital. We gathered my belonging and headed back to the hospital. Of course it took a few hours for them to decide what to do with me, but predictably, they decided to keep me there. When I was admitted I w as told they would do another ultrasound the following day and possibly send me home the next day. I got settled into my room and bed and Josh headed home. Through the first 2 days there I had a stream of roommates coming and going at all hours of the day and night. Lisa called at one point to tell me that Nafi’s grandmother had passed away and Nafi was heading to the states. I can’t remember if this was on Tuesday or Wednesday, but Lisa told Moshe while Jordy was around and Moshe made a comment about how now his Bubby doesn’t have a Mommy anymore. Jordy then remarked that since she had no Mommy, she could do whatever she wanted! Kids say the darndest things!
On Wednesday morning the doctors came on their rounds and informed me that I would not be having another ultrasound that day, they wanted to monitor me more first. However people kept paging me to come to ultrasound. I told the nurse that the doctor told me not to go but the nurse came back and said I had to go. So I went and of course the results were worse.
On Thursday morning they came on rounds and the resident asked me why I went to the ultrasound the day before. I told them that I tried not going but was finally sent there. The doctor that morning (there are different doctors each day but the resident is the same) said that I would stay there and they would do another ultrasound on Sunday. I lost it then. I begged to go home and come back Sunday. I told them that I wasn’t getting any rest and I was exhausted and wanted to go home. I told them I was uncomfortable and wasn’t eating since the food was so gross. I tried everything. They said Sunday. I called Josh in tears because I was so tired. He called and spoke to the resident who told him she would get the doctor to have me do another ultrasound on Friday morning and if it was better they’d let me go home before Shabbat. I felt a little better after that.. Josh brought the kids in the afternoon along with a DVD for them to watch. They spent a while with me but headed home when the kids started to get antsy. That night I was so exhausted and thought I would finally get a decent night sleep since at the time I went to bed I had no roommates. Silly me. At about 12:45 they brought in another roommate. I finally fell back asleep at 2 and then at 3:30am they brought in a second roommate. I fell back asleep at around 4:30 and they woke me at 5:50am to take my temperature and blood pressure. Not sure why it is called bed rest in the hospital. There is no rest involved. I went for the ultrasound in the morning and was not surprised when they said things were worse still so I would be spending Shabbat there. In the afternoon Josh came with Jordy and my Mom with a birthday cake that Josh made from scratch (yes, I was very impressed that he baked a cake as I am pretty sure this was the first time he has ever done so in his life)! We had a mini-early birthday party and ate the cake. Otherwise I spent the rest of the day in bed. About an hour after Shabbat a man came yelling down the hallway “Banot, Kiddush” and all us women want to the hallway where a man made kiddush very loud. Then they brought trays with Shabbat dinner and 2 challah rolls. My 2 roommates both has their husbands staying at the hotel next to the hospital, so there was a lot of noise in the room. I ate my 2 challah rolls and not much else and settled in with my book. At 9pm all the lights went out and tiny little lights above the beds went on so I was still able to read. At 10 I asked the nurse for something to help me sleep (the doctor told me that it wouldn’t be a problem). The nurse said they couldn’t give me anything because it isn’t safe for the baby. I told the nurse that the doctor said it would be ok. She said that she couldn’t give me anything except Tylenol. I said no thank you to the Tylenol and headed back to read some more. When the roommates husbands left at around 11 I thought I would fall asleep but it took another hour of reading before I could.
Shabbat morning I actually slept a decent amount. They woke me at around 6 to take my temperature but otherwise it was pretty quiet in the room so I fell back asleep until around 8:30. Breakfast included 2 challah rolls and sure enough around 9:15 the man yelled his kiddush announcement and made kiddush in the hallway. I ate and spent the rest of the morning reading. A gross lunch was brought around noon. I ate the bread (yes, I ate mostly only bread and pudding in the hospital-a great diet) and tasted the chicken. At 2pm the lights went out again and I decided that since it was pretty quiet that it was naptime. I slept for about 2 hours and then continued my reading. They brought dinner around 6:30 and that was basically it for Shabbat. They announced Havdallah at 8:45pm and Shabbat was over. I had a few phone calls wishing me a Happy Birthday and then I took a shower and went back to bed.
Sunday morning I figured I would be having an ultrasound but when the doctors came to do their rounds the doctor said that since I wasn’t in labor(duh) I didn’t need to be there. So they would release me…hooray!!! I called Josh with the good news and packed up my belongings. It took another hour or so for them to get the paperwork done so it wasn’t until close to 2:30 that Josh and I made it home. I happily reunited with my comfy bed! I was completely exhausted and fell asleep for a few hours. My mom had come over to watch the kids so that Josh could go play baseball(poor guy hasn’t been able to do anything in months). I went back to sleep a few hours later and had the best sleep ever.
Monday I spent all day in bed watching 24. The kids were both out most of the day between different camps and play dates. Nothing notable happened otherwise.
This morning I headed back to the doctors. I was a little worried he was going to send me right back to the hospital and was all ready with my arguments as to why I shouldn’t go but he told me I was good for another week. I happily returned home to watch the remainder of season 1 of 24(thanks Eva for the recommendation, it is a really good show!). Josh took Danya to the doctor to look at the rash she had on her hand (he took her on Sunday but she had a tantrum and wouldn’t let him look so we tried again today). She was a big girl and let him look and he gave her cream for it. When she came home we covered her hair in mayonnaise in preparation for the lice removal (which we found last night). After Danya and Jordy ate dinner Danya and I spent a lot of time chatting while I combed her hair. She also called and chatted with Pops and Danya and Jordy left a Happy Birthday message for Maayan. Still reading???
